Do roof shingles fade over time?

Shingles are a durable, wear-resistant roofing material. However, over time, they do undergo natural aging and begin to change their original properties, including their appearance. Does a shingle roof fade? Specialists from Roofing & Siding in Cape Cod explained this.

How different materials affect the fading of your roof

The ability to retain its original color and the rate of color change due to ultraviolet exposure depend on the roofing material. Let’s consider common options.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt material is prone to fading, and the intensity of this process depends on the initial color of the shingles and its saturation. Dark tones fade faster than light ones. Fading typically happens evenly under normal conditions, but sometimes certain areas may change color more quickly. Color inconsistency is influenced by the building’s location, weather conditions, nearby trees, and local roof repairs (new shingles will be brighter).

Metal Shingles

Metal roofs are strong and durable, and thanks to a special coating, they are reliably protected from corrosion and heavy pollution. The lifespan of the roof and the saturation of its color depend on the material’s outer layer. If it’s a high-quality coating, the original color will remain vibrant and saturated for a long time. Even painted roofs can last 30-40 years if high-quality paint was used. However, regular maintenance is necessary in any case.

With a poor-quality coating, light spots may appear, especially if the region’s weather is harsh and the paint is light or bright, such as lemon yellow. More resistant shades – metallic – reflect sunlight well, look attractive, and don’t fade.

Slate Roofing Materials and Weather Impact

Slate roofs maintain the natural color of the stone well, which distinguishes them from painted metal and asphalt roofs. However, according to information from the National Roofing Contractors Association, even slate can gradually acquire an earthy tone over time.
The color resistance of different types of slate roofing varies. It also depends on the finish – the outer layer that gives an appealing appearance and slows wear. If slate has faded, it doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced. However, the dulling process will continue. Though fireproof and other properties remain intact.

Clay Color Remains Unchanged

The shade of clay tiles remains unchanged for up to 50 years. The material’s structure provides weather resistance, including resistance to ultraviolet rays. The presence of pigment enhances this property. The red clay hue is natural and permanent, unlike synthetic and organic added pigments. While minimal fading may occur, it is almost imperceptible.

Reasons and Consequences of Fading Shingles on Your Roof

The roof is always exposed to the open air and constantly subjected to external factors, including negative ones. The change in the roof’s shade is caused by the following factors:

  • Sunlight. Ultraviolet rays break down pigments and disrupt the chemical bonds in the coloring substances.
  • Initial color of the shingles. Dark colors are more prone to fading than light colors.
  • Roof placement. If the roof is on the sunny side and is not protected by nearby trees or taller buildings, it is continuously exposed to ultraviolet rays throughout the day.
  • Weather conditions. If the weather changes frequently and drastically, with hail, strong winds, rain, and snow, it accelerates the wear of the roof, affecting its structure and color. Pigment can be partially washed out or blown away.
  • Problems with home ventilation. If ventilation is not functioning properly, the attic space can become extremely hot, and overheating also triggers fading.
  • Lack of protective outer coating. Without this, the material is vulnerable and more exposed to environmental factors.
  • Low-quality roofing. Low-quality materials may contain unstable, rapidly degrading coloring substances.
  • End of the roof’s lifespan. If the roof was installed a long time ago and the manufacturer’s stated service life has expired, this can also be a reason for fading.

Sometimes, a change in shade is not just an external defect but a sign of wear and structural damage to the shingles. This “symptom” should not be ignored, as it may indicate that the roof can no longer perform its functions: protecting against moisture and regulating temperatures inside the building. Additionally, a house with a faded roof will lose some of its value when resold.

When to Replace Roof Shingles: 7 Signs

When is a complete replacement of faded shingles necessary? The following signs indicate the need for replacement:

  1. Unevenness. Intact shingles lie flat without bumps or dents, which can interfere with water drainage and the sliding off of snow. Waves, sunken central areas, or raised edges indicate poor roof condition.
  2. “Bald spots” on the shingles, loss of granules. Granules can be found in the gutters around the house. The shedding of particles indicates that the material is even more exposed to ultraviolet rays, wear, aging, damage, and thinning.
  3. Cracks. These are caused by the loss of flexibility, drying out of shingles due to intense sun, heat, and dry weather. Cracked elements are no longer watertight and allow water to leak in, causing moisture to enter the home.
  4. Changed, uneven color – fading, light spots, or streaks. These signs also point to roof aging.
  5. Moss. Moss has large roots that penetrate asphalt shingles, displacing granules and causing them to fall off. Additionally, moss absorbs and holds water, increasing the weight load on the roof and raising the risk of corrosion on metal parts. By removing the green layer, you can assess the condition of the roof beneath it.
  6. Dark streaks. This is not only an aesthetic issue but also a sign of algae growth on the roof. Algae, combined with fungus, forms lichen, which can damage and destroy the structure of the shingles. If large areas are affected, and it is difficult to remove the lichen, the roof may need to be replaced.
  7. Old roof age. Shingles usually last up to 30 years. If more time has passed, replacement is necessary. In some cases, the roof deteriorates faster, for example, if the house is located in a coastal area or experiences frequent hail and hurricanes.

Some signs are visible to the homeowner from the ground with the naked eye or through binoculars. However, for a thorough assessment of the roof’s condition, it’s better to consult specialists.
