Types of Roof

The roof of a house serves several key purposes — it protects against the elements and gives the building a finished appearance. With so many materials and designs available, it can be challenging to choose the right option. This guide covers common roofing materials and roof structures, along with their main features.

Types of Roofing Materials

Asphalt and Fiberglass Shingles

Made with a fiberglass mat core, this material is strong and tear-resistant. It’s affordable, easy to install, and available in a wide range of colors. Some options can last up to 50 years.

Wood Shingles and Shakes

Typically made from red, yellow, or white cedar. Cedar resists rot and insect damage. A wood roof costs more and requires specialized installation skills.

Clay and Concrete Tile Roofing

Produced from clay or concrete, with tiles installed in overlapping rows. Best suited for warm climates without heavy rainfall or severe frost.

Rubber Roofing (EPDM)

EPDM refers to the base material — a synthetic rubber. Ideal for flat or low-slope roofs, used in both residential and commercial buildings.

Composite Roofing

Made from multiple materials, such as resins and recycled rubber (e.g., from old tires). Composite slate imitation is popular — more durable and easier to install than natural slate.

Metal Roofing

Covers a range of metals, supplied as sheets or large panels cut on-site. Works for residential, agricultural, and commercial buildings. More challenging to install on curved structures, but can be installed over existing roofing.

Corrugated Roofing

Thin sheets with alternating ridges and grooves — usually steel, polycarbonate, or fiberglass-asphalt mixes. Common for sheds and agricultural structures, less so for houses.

Flat Roofing

Includes EPDM, TPO, PVC membranes, or spray-applied high-density polyurethane. Often used in commercial buildings.

Slate Roofing

Natural stone — expensive and difficult to install but extremely durable, lasting up to 75 years.

Solar Shingles & Solar Roofs

A building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system. Solar shingles match the size and shape of asphalt shingles, allowing a combined installation.

Energy-Efficient Shingles

Reflect sunlight, reducing heat transfer indoors and lowering cooling costs. They also reduce UV damage to the roof, extending its lifespan.

Types of Roof Designs

Gable Roofs

Triangle-shaped, simple, durable, and affordable. Excellent at shedding water and snow, but vulnerable to high winds if not installed properly.

Shed (Single-Slope) Roof

One slope running from high to low. Often used for smaller structures; less common for large homes.

Gambrel Roof

Two slopes on each side — the lower slope is much steeper. Common for barns. Provides spacious attic potential but performs poorly in heavy snow or strong winds.

Mansard Roof

French in origin, with four slopes of varying angles. Allows for livable attic space but is complex and expensive to build, and less resistant to heavy snow or wind.

Hip Roof

Four slopes meeting at the top. Performs well in strong winds and uses fewer materials than a gable.

Hip-and-Valley (Dutch Hip) Roof

Sloped walls meeting at a ridge, excellent in windy climates but more complex and costly to install.

Pyramid Roof

Four equal triangular sides meeting at a single point. Extremely wind-resistant but limits interior attic space and is costly to construct.

A-Frame Roof

Acts as both roof and walls. Withstands snow and wind well but requires careful interior planning.

M-Shaped Roof

Two gable roofs joined together. Striking design but prone to water drainage issues.

Dutch Gable Roof

Similar to a hip roof but with small gables at each end, allowing for windows and additional space.

Flat Roofs

Appear flat but have a slight slope for drainage. Common in commercial buildings; can be used for recreation or rooftop gardens.

Skillion Roof

A single steep slope, ideal for solar panels. Efficient at shedding rain and snow.

Dome Roof

Rounded shape, visually striking, and strong against snow and wind, but expensive and difficult to build.

Jerkinhead Roof

Gable ends are clipped or turned down, reducing wind force on the structure.

Curved Roof

Arch-like design, wind-resistant, often custom-made and more expensive.

Since 2002, I have dedicated my career to construction, starting as a cleanup worker and laborer. Despite tough conditions, I quickly mastered roofing and siding, and within six months, I was handling complex tasks. Later, I became a subcontractor, growing the business with a partner and expanding our team.
