How long does a cedar shake roof last and how to make it last longer

The condition and longevity of shingles are affected by various factors: wood characteristics, climatic conditions, atmospheric effects, maintenance, and the quality of roofing work. 

Quality of your cedar shingles

The type of cedar is important. Western red cedar is durable and excellent for making shingles. It contains natural oils that prevent pest attacks and rot. White cedar is also reliable, but less strong and has a shorter lifespan.

The grade is also important:

• Common. These are cut-offs from cedar logs. This roofing material is cheap, low-quality, and prone to warping and cracking.
• Select. A mix of 80% straight-grain wood and 20% common wood. This material is also called “premium”.
• 100% straight-grain. This is shingles made from high-quality cedar fibers. Each shingle is hand-selected, so it has a perfect shape, lays evenly, is not damaged, and retains its original characteristics for a long time.

Moisture

Contact with water is a frequent cause of cedar shingle damage. Moisture penetrates the fibers, causing the wood to swell, rot, and develop mold. The presence of lichen, algae, moss, and other debris worsens this, as they trap water, preventing the roof from drying naturally.

Climate

The following adverse climatic conditions reduce service life:

• Frequent rain and high humidity, which promote mold growth and wood rot.
• Cold winters. Frost makes shingles brittle and damages their structure.
• Summer heat, which can cause cracking and drying of the wood.
• Frequent hail: large, fast-moving hailstones can damage the roof and compromise its integrity.

Ultraviolet exposure

UV radiation causes wood fibers to break down and makes shingles brittle. Roofs exposed to sunlight fade, dry out, and deform over time. However, these effects can be prevented by treating the roof with special protective coatings.

Natural deterioration

Natural wear is inevitable – aging wood becomes more brittle and gradually deforms. But the process can be slowed by applying products that protect the material from environmental factors.

Installation

Proper installation is a crucial factor. If installation is poor or contains errors, gaps may remain or form over time. Water can seep through these gaps, causing mold and rot. If shingles are not securely fastened, wind can easily tear them off.

Regular roof maintenance

Cedar roofs require regular maintenance. Comprehensive care includes:

• Cleaning – timely removal of debris from the roof, such as leaves, sand, dirt, bird droppings, and insects.
• Protection against pests, mold, rot, and fading – treating the roof with special coatings containing antifungal components and other additives.
• Replacing damaged sections – removing worn-out shingles and installing new ones.
• Periodic inspections to detect mold, hail damage, or other defects that affect the roof’s lifespan.
