Asphalt Roofing

Roofing and Siding of Cape Cod

Asphalt roofing shingles are the most commonly used covering on residential properties in the market. Asphalt’s primary purpose in roofing shingles is to serve as a waterproofing agent. Asphalt also holds the granules in place and adds to the overall strength of the roofing shingle. The best asphalt will stay flexible and will not dry out or become hard or brittle for the expected life of the roofing shingle.

White cedar shingles

With its charming, rustic look and natural resistance to insects and decay, cedar siding is an attractive and practical option for your home's exterior.White cedar siding only comes in one style, so its design possibilities are limited. However, when you want a light look for your home's exterior, white cedar weathers to an attractive silver-gray shade. Because of its light color and weathered look, white cedar is often used in coastal areas.

white cedar siding is available in different grades, which affect the overall look of your home's exterior. Clear grades, which are usually designated as A or B, have a fine, smooth appearance that shows very few imperfections and growth characteristics. These grades tend to hold finishes better and give your exterior a more modern look.

Chimney flashing repair

Chimneys are notorious for leaking, and the culprit is almost always the sheet metal flashings. Leaks around the chimney are not always evident right away but they can cause serious structural damage. Moisture enters the roofing, the attic, and possibly the ceiling areas causing wood rot, roof damage, attic damage, and drywall damage in the ceilings.

The flashing is sheet metal installed for the purpose of ensuring that the connection between the chimney and roof is watertight, but the effectiveness of flashing eventually expires. The best way to avoid moisture issues caused by flashing is to get an annual chimney inspection; every aspect of the chimney system is carefully inspected.

Installation and Replacement

Skylights are very aptly named; they are windows that point straight to the sky, and that can mean serious light in your home. They are great for places that don’t have windows, such as a bathroom that sits in the middle of the house. In many cases, the sunlight streaming through the skylights means that you don’t have to use any other lighting at all.Skylights are a good investment, if your desire is to enhance the aesthetics of your home. They will provide an impressive amount of natural light while giving you a snapshot of the night sky. And like many other architectural enhancements, skylights can add to the resale value of your home. Skylights can also provide natural ventilation, providing you have the hinged-style so that you can open the window up to let air in.

Proper installation is absolutely crucial — without it, skylights can leak, and that can cause serious damage to your home in a very short period of time. Condensation can also build up on skylights, and that leads to more gradual water damage — but it’s damage nonetheless.

Aluminum Seamless Gutters

Aluminum gutters are a great product. They don't rust, are available in popular colors, can be painted to match other colors and can be shaped quite easily. These rain handling devices have been around for close to 30 years.

The term seamless gutters can be confusing because there are seams in the system. The seams are only at the corners and downspout outlets. These joints are fastened more securely and sealed for stability and leak resistance. The Seamless Gutter itself is continuous which makes them both strong and visually more appealing.

Rubber roofing

A rubber roof, known in the roofing business as an EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) roof, has a lot of advantages and only a few disadvantages. One of the big advantages to rubber is the price. Not only is the roofing material itself less expensive than most other choices, but the product is also lightweight, and installation is fast and easy, reducing labor and installation costs. The rubber is glued into place, negating the use of heat, which can adversely affect a homeowner’s insurance policy.

Rubber is also long lasting. Most of these roofs are laid in a single piece, which means there are no seams or very few, depending on the exact layout of the roof. Few seams mean few places for water to seep under the roofing and destroy the home.Rubber is also one of the “greenest” choices that a homeowner can make. The rubber itself takes less energy to produce than most other roofing materials and is often made from recycled materials to begin with. And the roof is 100% recyclable at the end of its long life.

One of the primary drawbacks to a rubber roof is its appearance. Most EPDM roofs are black.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is made from a PVC plastic. Unlike wood or cedar, it won't rot or flake. Vinyl is also less expensive to purchase and install than most other siding materials. Unfortunately, even the best vinyl siding can crack, split or look dull after a few years. Vinyl produces hazardous byproducts; it will release toxic chemicals when burned.

Vinyl siding is water resistant, not waterproof. Because of the way that it is installed, water can sometimes get between the siding and the surface of your home. This can cause infestation and mold problems.

Red Cedar

Roofing and Siding

Red Cedar shingles have a much higher durability than the white variety. Once installed, they can last several lifetimes. They have high weather resistance properties and a high resistance to moisture. This makes them ideal for roofing in areas of high humidity. Red cedar contains tannic acid, a natural preservative which helps to extend the longevity of the shingles. The high water repellency ensures that your shingles do not warp. Red cedar shingles give your roof excellent dimensional stability. They also have a unique cellular composition which captures tiny pockets of air and improves the insulation capacity of the shingles. You can enjoy a cooler house during the summer and more warmth indoors in the winter. This makes red cedar shingles a good choice if you want to enhance energy efficiency in your home.

The tannic acid in red cedar causes the shingles to eventually darken and become blotchy. Unlike the white shingles, you cannot paint red cedar shingles. They have a poor absorption capacity and do not readily catch stain or paint. The shingles also cost more than the white shingles which may hamper installation.

Pipe flange repair

One of the most common issues that tend to make a roof leak is an old or damaged pipe flange. A pipe flange is a piece of flashing that is installed around any plumbing or ventilation PVC pipe that exits through your roof. These pipes could be used to vent anything from radon to a simple bathroom vent. A pipe flange has either an aluminum or plastic base that is mounted to the roof deck and has a rubber flange that seals tight to the PVC plumbing pipe that exits though the roof. This rubber flange will dry out and crack leaving an opening for water to enter the attic.

On average, depending on the house, a pipe flange can last anywhere from 8 to 15 years after the new roof was installed.Roofing and Siding of Cape Cod only installs the highest quality materials and thanks to our one of a kind installation technique, we offer lifetime warranties on our labor.

Alaskan Yelow Cedar Shingles

To start Alaskan Yellow Cedar is not cedar, it is cypress. Correctly called Alaskan Yellow Cypress.Alaskan Yellow Cedar is a dense hardwood, extremely hardy, and durable. The Alaskan yellow cedar roof is much less likely to erode, and curl than that of the western red cedar roof. This immensely hard and durable species is vastly more enduring.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar has exceptional decay resistance combined with a fine texture, strength and straight grain. Its consistent yellow color gives it a characteristic unlike most other species, but the most outstanding characteristic of Yellow Cedar is its natural ability to” weather uniformly” to a consistent silvery grey on sidewalls and roofs, a characteristic that is highly sought after by discerning homeowners and architects.

Fibercement Siding

In appearance fiber cement siding most often consists of overlapping horizontal boards, imitating wooden siding, clapboard and imitation shingles.

Thermal resistance and sound transmission vary greatly between fiber cement products. Fiber cement sheet products rate poorly in thermal resistance and sound transmission and separate wall insulation is highly recommended. Generally the thicker and denser the product the better resistance it will have to temperature and sound transmission.he external cladding products require very little maintenance once installed and painted. The thicker/denser fiber cement products have excellent impact resistance but the thinner less dense products need to be protected from impact. Compared to wooden siding, fiber cement is not susceptible to termites or rot.

Copper Gutters

Copper gutters are very durable as they don't rust. It's not unusual for them to last 25 years or longer on a home.Copper gutters are available in several styles such as half-round, which looks great on historical homes, and the more modern K style. Half-round copper gutters can be purchased with one or both edges beaded to give the guttering more strength and add to its appearance. Most manufacturers sell copper guttering in 10- and 20-foot lengths, which are soldered together to avoid leaky seams and attached to your home with hangers or spikes. Some people prefer copper to alternate materials. Keep in mind that copper does acquire a green patina over the years. Some people like it, some don't.

Missing Shingles Replacement

If your roof has missing or torn shingles, you need to be aware that those missing and torn shingles may be roof warning signs of other more extensive damage hidden beneath your roof. And, if you choose to ignore the warnings, you’ll be forced to deal with the subsequent, and possibly extensive, damage that may occur. Missing and torn shingles provide an easy entry point for wind driven rain to blow into your attic or interior leaving the rest of your home susceptible to major damage.High winds can lift up asphalt shingle tabs and break them off.

Even if you don’t see water stains on your ceiling or walls, have the roof checked out by an experienced roofer who repairs missing shingles. Without a professional roof inspection, you cannot be assured that you do not have any leaks in your roof. By the time a leak shows up in your home, water has already soaked through your shingles, underlayment and plywood, causing major rain & water damage to your home. If left unattended, this water will eventually saturate your attic insulation and sheetrock. Taking several weeks, or even months to develop, a wall or ceiling stain is probably not the result of a particular storm, but is a symptom of long-term deterioration of your roofing material.
